Congratulations to Joseph T. Bossone and Demetris Rotsides, the 2012 recipients of the Wellhofer/Wilinski Scholarship Award. Both of these fine young men demonstrated the highest level of academic achievement and are well deserving of this year’s scholarship. Joseph T. Bossone is the grandson of Dominic Bossone, owner of the Squan Tavern in Manasquan, past president of the NJLBA and an association member for more than 30 years. Demetris Rotsides is the son of Zacharias D. Rotsides, owner of the Garden State Diner in Wrightstown and a long-standing member of the NJLBA.
William G. Wellhofer, of Atlantic City, was one of the founders of the New Jersey Tavern Association, which later became the United Tavern Owners Association of New Jersey and now operates under the name of the New Jersey Licensed Beverage Association. In 1944, a memorial was established to recognize Mr. Wellhofer for his foresight and drive in founding the association, as well as for the ideals he fostered for on-premise licensees in New Jersey. Because Mr. Wellhofer was a college graduate and believed in higher education, the association decided to recognize his commitment to the industry by creating the William G. Wellhofer Scholarship Foundation.
The Robert Wilinski Scholarship was later established in 1991 as a lasting memorial to the late Robert Wilinski, who passed away in April of that year. Mr. Wilinski was an attorney and friend who represented the NJLBA for more than three decades. Mr. Wilinski joined the William T. Cahill law firm in 1951, later becoming a senior partner. He began attending NJLBA board meetings in 1958, when the association’s chief counsel, Mr. Cahill, was elected to Congress. The newly created scholarship became part of the existing William G. Wellhofer Scholarship Foundation and was renamed the Wellhofer/Wilinski Scholarship Foundation.
Children and grandchildren of current NJLBA members, as well as retired members who were active in the association for at least five years prior to retirement, are eligible to apply for the scholarships. All applications are reviewed anonymously by a committee, and recipients are selected based on criteria that include GPA, community service projects and extracurricular activities. Two $10,000 scholarships are awarded annually, with each recipient receiving $2,500 per year for four years.
Thank you to all who attended and contributed to the tremendous success of this year’s Wellhofer/Wilinski Scholarship picnic, held on June 27th at the Oak Tree Lodge in Wall Township. (See photos here.) Special thanks to Point Pleasant Distributors, Ritchie & Page Distributors, Shore Point Distributors and Fedway Associates for their generous contributions that truly helped to make this year’s picnic an event to remember! We also want to thank Allied Beverage Group, R&R Marketing and High Grade Beverage for their generous contribution to the scholarship fund as well.
