BRAZIL’S SAGATIBA CACHAÇA RETURNS TO THE U.S.

Cachaça (pronounced ka-SHAH-sa)—the sugarcane spirit of Brazil and signature ingredient in the Caipirinha—is ready for its American close-up now that it is officially recognized by TTB and no longer needs to be called “Brazilian rum.” Campari is doing its part, re-introducing Sagatiba to the U.S. (now in New York, Florida, California and Nevada with more states to follow). Sagatiba Pura (SRP $24.99), with a delicate aroma of fresh-cut sugarcane and a clean, smooth moutheel and a slightly botanical flavor, is versatile and mixable (try it in place of vodka). Sagatiba Velha (SRP $29.99) is smooth and layered with notes of butternut and plantain; savor it neat, as a chilled shot, or as an alternative to aged rum or tequila in cocktails. 80 proof.

MOLECULAR MIXOLOGY…THE HOME EDITION!

One could argue that all mixology is essentially chemistry. Now adventurous home bartenders can try their hand at the extreme edge of the artform, thanks to three new kits from Molecule-R. The three do-it-yourself cocktail kits—Margarita, Cosmopolitan, Mojito—contain all one needs to dabble in the art of molecular mixology: pre-measured sachets of natural food additives, tools (silicone mold, slotted spoon, pipettes) and a step-by-step recipe booklet. By utilizing these elements and the requisite liquids, the home mixologist can whip up a tasty citrus foam for a Margarita, encapsulate a Cosmopolitan into a burstable sphere, or create suspending mint “caviars” for an avante-garde Mojito. Each kit is attractively gift-boxed; SRP $29.99 each.

GRAND MARNIER DOES FLAVOR RIGHT

Before fruity and confectionary vodkas roamed the earth, liqueurs were the kings of flavor. Grand Marnier is releasing a trio of new products this fall that show how it’s done. GM Titanium (August release, SRP $44.99) is an exotic new blend of wild tropical orange essence and Asian Calamansi citrus with a dash of spices. Coming in September, Grand Marnier Raspberry Peach, this year’s Signature Collection Blend (first in the series was Natural Cherry), bursts with succulent European raspberries and rare red peaches from the South of France (SRP $39.99). Arriving later this fall, Grand Marnier Cuvée 1880 (SRP $350) commemorates the original Grand Marnier liqueur created in 1880; this distinctive blend—with an even deeper expression of the signature orange-peel character—is made exclusively of aged XO Cognac from the Grande Champagne subdistrict.

BEAM AIMS TO RAISE THE BOURBON BAR

Focusing on one product for more than two centuries made Jim Beam a household name in bourbon; today, that experience has also put them in prime position to innovate. The first two expressions under the Jim Beam Signature Craft label are about to hit shelves. The Signature Craft 12 Year (a permanent part of the new line) is a smooth, sweet whiskey aged 12 years in charred American oak. The Signature Craft Rare Spanish Brandy is the first in a limited edition of small batches; finishing the bourbon with a dose of b randy sounds simple, but the result is deliciously complex. Both new products launch in August at 86 proof and SRP $39.99.
