Following up on the success of the “Toast to End Hunger” event of 2012, E. & J. Gallo and Empire Merchants collaborated this September on a fundraiser to benefit Food Bank For New York City. The kickoff event was held at Russo’s on the Bay in Howard Beach; a crowd of 200 included 87 retailers among the industry reps, and set in motion fundraising that has already (as of mid-October) helped provide 300,000 meals.
David Seiler, Division Manager/Director of Sales for Empire’s Big Apple Division, noted, “The idea to participate in a charity that benefits the local community was the easiest decision that Empire Merchants and the Gallo team could make. The ability to do what you love for a living and be able to benefit the community is a privilege. When you hear about the amount of food insecurity in your home community, you just want to make a difference in a positive way.”
Best of all, the program is designed to extend well beyond the kickoff event. Gallo will make a donation for every case sold of Edna Valley Vineyards, MacMurray Ranch Vineyards, Frei Brothers, William Hill and Louis Martini wines. “Each bottle sold will create one meal, or 12 meals per case, and our goal is to fund 250,000 more meals,” added Seiler.
Empire Merchants CEO and General Manager E. Lloyd Sobel commented, “It is amazing that here, in the richest city in the world, more than 2 million New Yorkers experience difficulty affording food for themselves and their families. And approximately one in five children in NYC relies on emergency food. I can’t imagine, as a father of three kids, the stress these parents feel every day.”
Established in 1983, Food Bank For New York City (foodbanknyc.org) is New York’s major hunger-relief organization, working in the five boroughs to provide food distribution, income support, and nutrition education. The organization serves a network of 1,000 community-based programs and partners—food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, senior centers, after-school programs and more.
