In October, Southern Wine & Spirits partnered with Food Network for the sixth annual New York City Wine & Food Festival. This year’s festival offered more than 120 events events over a four-day period and raised more than $1 million for Food Bank for New York City and Share Our Strength, both charitable organizations devoted to alleviating childhood and adult hunger and food insecurity.

Piers 92 and 94 served as the anchor spots, hosting many events throughout the weekend. One of the most popular is The Grand Tasting, which kicked off on Trade Day, Friday, October 18th with the Southern Wine & Spirits Trade Tasting presented by Beverage Media. At the exclusive trade-only event, over 80 wine and spirits tables and eight wine and spirit build-outs offered opportunities to sample established, new and forthcoming brand extensions and flavors. Rosalinda Secondini, director of special events at Southern Wine & Spirits of New York said, “Trade Day was better than ever in its new space at Pier 94. It made for a great start to the Grand Tasting, and the variety of wine, spirits and food has never been better.”

Secondini is part of a team that worked hard preparing all aspects of the festival. Matt Munn, senior vice president & general manager at Southern Wine & Spirits of New York, commented, “Without the generosity of so many wine and spirit supplier sponsors and their brands, we wouldn’t be able to put the Festival on in the first place. It helps that we have partnered with Food Network and that the event benefits two fantastic charities, and it certainly benefits us to have such a solid festival team producing and managing the event from start to finish.”

Next year, the 7th Annual New York City Wine & Food Festival will take place October 16-19, 2014.

More Festival Highlights

In addition to the Grand Tasting events, this year’s festival offered a mix of perennial favorites and some new additions, including the Blue Moon Burger Bash, Meatpacking Uncorked (sponsored by Cupcake Vineyards), Patrón XO Café Late Night, and the Taste NY Brunch hosted by Friends of Governor Cuomo. The Taste NY event promoted the agricultural bounty of New York State. Chef dinners throughout the weekend were also a big draw, offering intimate settings for some of the country’s leading chefs.

Highlights for the trade included wine seminars held at the Hudson Hotel with winemakers and brand owners. On Saturday, “A South African Wine Odyssey: From Its Origins to the House of Mandela” was presented by Selena Cuffe and Judia Black; “The Art of Crafting Bubbly” was presented by Champagne Henriot Cellar Master Laurent Fresnet. Highlights from Sunday included “Gerard Bertrand, Diversity from South of France” hosted by Gerard Bertrand U.S. director Mark Fine; “Saké Simplified: From Rice to Riches,” presented by Monica Samuels; as well as “Château d’Esclans: The Rosé Lifestyle of St. Tropez” hosted by Paul Chevalier of Shaw-Ross and Sacha Lichine.
