Diageo hosted “The Diageo Liquid Cellar” in the Chelsea Arts District during Super Bowl Week, pairing Sports Illustrated and Delta Airlines with hot brands from Diageo’s portfolio via a series of fun events. Delta hosted a pop-up Delta Sky Club, where Master Sommelier Andrea Robinson presented wines that she chose for Delta’s flagship Sky Club at JFK’s Terminal 4.

Annual Wine Star Awards Salute Industry Members

The New York Public Library was filled with 500 wine and spirits industry members on January 27th for the annual Wine Enthusiast Wine Star Awards Gala. Among the evening’s honorees: Barbara Banke of Jackson Family Wines was awarded Wine Person of the Year; Chairman Tom Klein accepted the award for Rodney Strong Vineyards as American Winery of the Year; and Peter Mondavi Sr. was honored as the year’s American Wine Legend.

Bacardi Sponsors Regional USBG Legacy Cocktail Showcase

In January, twelve bartenders faced off in the 4th annual USBG Legacy Cocktail Showcase sponsored by Bacardi Rum. Judges William Ramos, Bacardi Sr. Brand Master; Jim Meehan, PDT & USBG; and John Mermayer, 2011 National Legacy Showcase winner selected Julie Renee Williams’s “Back in a New York Groove” and Roberto Rosa’s “La Otra Ala” as the winners. They represented New York in the National Showcase in Miami in February. At the showcase, Naomi Levy advanced to the finals, earning an all-expenses paid trip to compete in Moscow at the Legacy Global Cocktail Showcase.

Roberto Rosa’s La Otra Ala
½ part Galliano
1 ½ parts Pineapple Juice
1 piece Egg White
1 barspoon Vanilla Syrup
3 dashes Peychaud’s Bitters      

Add Bacardi Superior, Galliano, pineapple juice, and vanilla syrup in to a shaker. Add egg whites and dry shake. Add ice, shake, and double strain into a chilled cocktail coupe.
Garnish: Float a star anise, slightly off center, on the egg white foam. The anise will represent the star in the Puerto Rican flag, add 3 dots of bitters and shape in to the red stripes of the Puerto Rican flag.

1 ½ parts Bacardi Superior
¾ part Lime Juice
¾ part Oregeat
½ part Dry Red Wine
1  Lime Wheel
      
Shake, pour over fresh cold draft in an old fashioned, red wine float

 

California Wine Exports Reach High in 2013

U.S wine exports (90% from California), reached a record high $1.55 billion in winery revenues for 2013, up 16.4% compared to the previous year, an increase for the fourth consecutive year by value. Volume shipments reached 435.2 million liters or 48.4 million cases, up 7.5%.

When innovating in the flavor space, Svedka aims to hit the crossroads of unique yet familiar, explains VP Marketing Diana Pawlik. “We believe if we can get that balance right we will appeal to a wider range of consumers,” she explains. “And we’re confident our two new flavors—Strawberry Lemonade and Mango Pineapple—will continue to raise the bar on flavor innovation.”

The flavored vodka universe is vast and constantly evolving, and Pawlik and her team seek to be ahead of the curve by looking outside the beverage alcohol industry: “We are constantly monitoring trends among multiple categories that include culinary, fragrance and other beverages to zero in on consumer appeal. Strawberry Lemonade is a contemporary twist on the wistful, classic lemonade drink. Mango Pineapple plays on the tropical aromas and flavors.”

Interestingly, much like Svedka’s most recently launched flavors, Orange Cream Pop and Strawberry Colada, Pawlik does not believe these new flavors will be constrained by seasonal appeal. “The flavors of the tropics have a year-round appeal as people are drawn to them,” she says. “And given the range of cocktails that can be created with these flavors, they are truly evergreen.”

Svedka’s flavors have enabled the brand to talk more about mixology—to bartenders and “home mixologists,” explains Pawlik: “It is the ease of creating delicious cocktails at home that appeals widely to consumers. We are seeing a lot more ‘home mixology’ as consumers enjoy experimenting and creating novel cocktails for themselves and friends. Our flavors are about mixology in the wider sense—on- and off-premise.”

With a sleek new package, the Svedka flavor portfolio is gaining share and momentum in markets across the country—and, it adds volume to the base brand, still one of the fastest-growing spirits brands in the country. “The expansion of flavors help bring new consumers into the brand franchise; they absolutely contribute in a significant way to the 80-proof growth.”

Both new products will be available nationwide beginning February, 2014 (varies by market) in 50ML (MSRP $1.99), 375ML (MSRP $6.99), 750ML (MSRP $12.99), 1L (MSRP $16.99) and 1.75L (MSRP $21.99).

At January’s “50 Great Portuguese Wines” event, famous reds like Muxagat from the Douro were poured alongside lesser-known wines like Quinta da Alorna from the Tejo region, and an unusual (and delicious) Moscatel Rosé 2012 from Jose Maria da Fonseca. In addition to hobnobbing with winemaking talent (Rui Cunha from Secret Spot Wines and Quinta de Paços; Luís Pato of Luís Pato; and Mário Cardoso from Quinta da Sequeira, among others) attendees sampled a rare treat: the 1969 Graham’s Single Harvest Tawny Port.

Domaine Select Wine Estates Hosts Grand Portfolio Tasting

Domaine Select Wine Estates held their Annual Grand Portfolio Tasting on January 21st in The Pool Room of The Four Seasons Restaurant. Despite snowy conditions, the event drew hundreds of customers from across the region. Allison Domeneghetti, co-founder of DSWE, said of the event, “We highlighted the diversity of the portfolio this year, setting up a Champagne Bar, a Saké Bar, a Wine Bar featuring quality value category selections, and of course, a Classic & Vintage Artisanal Spirits Cocktail Bar.” Over 100 producers were represented.
