Kenny Chesney’s Rum is One of the Industry’s Fastest Growing Brands—and Most Mixable

Blue Chair Bay Rum is turning one year old, and has lots to celebrate. With distribution in almost every state, Blue Chair Bay is one of the fastest growing new brands in the business, with sales exploding from coast to coast. “What we learned is that we got the most important piece of the puzzle right—the rum,” says CEO Mark Montgomery. “People are constantly telling us this is the best-tasting rum they’ve ever had. And many of the industry elite weren’t necessarily expecting that from a ‘celebrity’ brand.”

The celebrity, of course, is an award-winning singer-songwriter Kenny Chesney, who created Blue Chair Bay from scratch to be the kind of rum he wants to share with friends—an embodiment of his island lifestyle. “We really do sell the beach,” says Montgomery, adding that Blue Chair Bay will be playing up the Kenny connection increasingly in 2014. “We do a lot of sampling and we have been surprised by how many people didn’t realize this is Kenny Chesney’s rum.”

So far, Coconut has emerged as the clear favorite of the Blue Chair Bay line-up, rounded out by White and Coconut Spiced. To taste is to believe, says Montgomery, so the Blue Chair Bay team’s primary focus is sampling consumers in 2014, as well as growing their digital footprint. “We feel strongly that for the brand to have a long life, we need both a strong presence with both our off- and on-premise partners, and our efforts will be focused around putting Blue Chair Bay in the hands of as many consumers as possible.”

At Cascabel, a funky taqueria in Manhattan, owner David Chiong uses Blue Chair Bay Coconut in his signature drink, Cascabel Colada. Combined with freshly muddled pineapple, ginger liqueur and served over ice, the Blue Chair Bay shines through with aromatic high notes of tropical coconut. “I prefer to use artisanal spirits, and often make my own infusions,” says Chiong. “I find Blue Chair Bay brings out other flavors really nicely in cocktails without being overpowering—and it doesn’t taste artificial or overly sweet like other coconut rums.”
