IMPERIAL BRANDS & SAMMY HAGAR HOIST NEW RUM

Sammy Hagar’s newest premium spirit, Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum, is set to rock via a marketing deal with Imperial Brands, the U.S. importer and marketer of Sobieski Vodka. As with Hagar’s Cabo Wabo Tequila, the rum is steeped in authenticity as well as star appeal. A part-time Maui resident, Hagar applied his “act local” philosophy to the premium silver rum, which is produced using pure Hawaiian first-growth and first-press sugar. SRP $21.99; 80 proof.

QUINTESSENTIAL TAPS GRAPPA AS FIRST SPIRITS IMPORT

National import, marketing and sales company Quintessential will carry the artisanal grappas of Italy’s Villa de Varda starting in April. Quintessential will import five Villa de Varda Grappas, each displaying distinctive characters based on their base grapes. “Trie,” from Pinot Blanc, Teroldego and Müller Thurgau; Pinot Grigio; Riserva Amarone; and Moscato will retail for $50-$60/300ml. An oak-aged, Grappa Amarone Stravecchia Alta Selezone in a special 750ml bottle will retail for $250.

VERMONT HARD CIDER DRAFTS TWO NEW OFFERINGS

On-premise cider appears to be heating up. Vermont Hard Cider Company is now offering Magners Pear Cider on tap. The 4.5% ABV cider, made in Clonmel, Ireland, from 100% pears, is already available here in bottles. On the domestic front, the company has expanded its Woodchuck line to include a draft-only Woodchuck Hopped Apple, which is blended with cascade hops after fermentation, infusing the cider with rich hop flavor. VP of Sales Terry Hopper calls the brew “a natural crossing point in the river between beer and cider.”

WILD TURKEY CELEBRATES ‘THE YEAR OF JIMMY RUSSELL’

Jimmy Russell, the longest-tenured active Master Distiller of any whiskey brand in North America, celebrates 60 years of service with Wild Turkey this year. Small wonder he’s known among industry peers as the “Buddha of Bourbon.” To celebrate his achievements, Wild Turkey is planning a number of special events throughout 2014. A new state-of-the-art Visitor Center opens on April 15th, including photos and memorabilia that serve as a time capsule of Jimmy’s colorful life. Additionally, the distillery will release a commemorative Diamond Anniversary bourbon created by Eddie Russell (aka Jimmy’s son, distilling partner and fellow Bourbon Hall of Famer). The limited-edition Diamond (3,000 9L cases; SRP $124.99) will be available at the Visitor Center starting in April, but will expand to key markets around the country in August and September.

Looking back at the arc bourbon has taken over the course of his career, Jimmy recalls, “Back in my younger days, bourbon was a southern gentleman’s drink. It was seen as a prestige drink. Now, the whole world has discovered it. It has really grown into this huge market. People enjoy the flavor, the taste, all of it. It’s funny how things happen.”
