MICHTER’S NEW WHISKEY TWIST: BARRELS TOASTED, NOT CHARRED

The latest whiskey from Michter’s, US*1 Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon, is made the exact same way as the distiller’s US*1 Bourbon—with one important difference. After being aged to full maturation, it gets additional time in custom barrels made from staves that have been air-dried for 18 months and toasted, but not charred like typical bourbon barrels. Weighing in at 91.4 proof (45.7% ABV), the limited release joins Michter’s portfolio of specialized American whiskies. SRP $48

KIBO: SAKÉ’S COMEBACK KID

In 2011, on the very day that the saké brewery Suisen Shuzo was preparing to ship its 2010 production, the facility was destroyed by the tsunami that decimated the Japanese coastal city of Rikuzentakata. As a valuable contributor to the local economy, Suisen Shuzo vowed to rebuild. Now, more than three years after the devastation, a saké marking their recovery is being imported to the U.S. by SakéOne: Kibo—meaning “hope”—a premium canned Junmai saké. Crafted from Hitomebore rice with a 70% polish rate, Kibo (pronounced key-bo) is soft and sweetly mellow with a slightly dry finish. ABV 15.5%; SRP $5.99/180ml can.
