CRIMSON WINE GROUP LAUNCHES UNIQUE MULTI-SOURCE AMERICAN BLEND

Literally pushing the envelope for red blends across state lines, Crimson Wine Group (CWG) has released Luminary, a wine using fruit from three renowned wine regions in California and one in Washington. “Our goal was to embody the pioneering American spirit with a wine concept that is completely different,” notes Erle Martin, CWG president and CEO. This unconventional blend includes: Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from Pine Ridge Vineyards in Napa Valley; Syrah from Double Canyon in Horse Heaven Hills, Washington; Syrah from Chamisal Vineyards in Edna Valley; and Zinfandel from Seghesio Family Vineyards in Alexander Valley. Debuting with the 2012 vintage, 2,300 cases were made; SRP $45.

VINTAGE POINT ADDS TWO NEW WINE ‘TREATS’

Winemaker Jayson Woodbridge has extended two of his seriously made but cheekily labeled wines. Cherry Tart 2013 Chardonnay sourced from three vineyards in Monterey County, Russian River and Napa Carneros (SRP $24.99). Layer Cake 2012 “Sea of Stones” Red Wine Blend ($14.99) from Mendoza, Argentina, comes from a single vineyard known for its Malbec, growing among an abundance of round river stones. It also includes touches of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Petit Verdot.

SWEET RED FROM STELLA ROSA SET TO GO NATIONAL

Stella Rosa, one of Nielsen’s top five Italian wine brands in the U.S., has extended its line with “Stella Red.” The limited edition (but nationally available) wine features flavors of ripe raspberry, strawberry and plum, all with a touch of sweetness and a deep red color. Sourced from the Northern Italian region of Piedmont, Stella Red was initially poured at San Antonio Winery’s California tasting rooms. (San Antonio’s Stella Rosa brand is the original semi-sweet, semi-sparkling Italian wine brand owned and imported by the Riboli family.) A clear consumer hit, the plush red blend starts shipping to retailers this month. SRP $11.95

HEDGES MAKES A MAGNUM-SIZED STATEMENT

Some vintners wear their terroir on their sleeves; Christophe Hedges wears his under, in the form of a tattoo representing the Red Mountain AVA. The radiant red triangle is also now part of the elaborate label Hedges himself designed for his family’s newest wine. Hedges Family Estate “La Haute Cuvée” (a nod to French heritage on his mother’s side) is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, bottled entirely in magnums, and the fi rst Hedges release that is certified Biodynamic. Rolling out nationally in January at SRP $175, it is varietally true and especially vivid in the glass, becoming more generous with air. If the BioD movement is looking for a poster wine, this could be it.
