After being postponed due inclement weather in January, the Wine Enthusiast 2014 Wine Star Awards Gala took place on April 25th at the New York Public Library. Among the honorees: Charles Merinoff was awarded Person of the Year; Charles Smith was awarded Winemaker of the Year; Jordan Winery was awarded American Winery of the Year; Opici Wines was awarded Wine Importer of the Year; and Anthony Terlato was given the Lifetime Achievement award.

ViniPortugal Stages Progressive Tasting and ‘Somm Chill Night’

On April 16th, ViniPortugal conducted a progressive tasting and “Somm Chill Night” at The Lobster Place in Chelsea Market. Consumers, media and VIP trade had the opportunity to taste a selection of Portuguese wines from 12 wineries, paired with seafood dishes by Chef Dave Siegel.

A series of events in April marked the 30th anniversary of the Gardinier Family at the helm of Château Phélan Ségur. Thierry Gardinier, owner with his two brothers Stephane and Laurent, and Veronique Dausse, Director of the château, came to the U.S. for the occasion. Events included a sommelier master class; a press lunch at The Lamb’s Club; the opening of l’Appart inside Le District; and a sommeliers’ luncheon at Colicchio & Sons.

Wines of Moldova: Back in the Big Apple

On April 28th, Wines of Moldova returned to New York City for their second annual tasting at the Astor Center. Attendees were able to take in an introductory seminar led by “World Wine Guys” Mike DeSimone and Jeff Jenssen. During the main walkaround tasting, the Moldovan Ambassador to the United Nations, Vlad Lupan, made a speech
about Moldova’s rich wine history and the country’s current situation with respect to Russia.

Time has flown for Esprit du Vin, the Palm Bay spinoff that has grown from four wineries to 60+ in just five years—while maintaining a clear focus on family-oriented, high-quality producers. The portfolio tasting on April 28th at the Gansevoort Hotel featured many visiting producers from Europe and the U.S., including Anne Trimbach of Maison F.E. La Quintinye Vermouth Royal enjoyed an appropriate stateside launch—at the French Consulate. Trade and press gathered on April 15th and enjoyed cocktails based on the line’s three vermouths—Blanc, Rouge and Extra Dry—and a short seminar. The cocktails paired beautifully with French-inspired snacks, including caramelized onion puffs, seared tuna on crostini and, of course, escargot.

Domaine Select Wine Estates Holds Annual Spring Tasting

Domaine Select Wine Estates held their Spring Portfolio Tasting, Round Table Series on April 27th at their headquarters in New York City. Over 200 wines, spirits and saké were presented in this intimate tasting format, providing guests the opportunity to sit down with winemakers and portfolio specialists. For the event, DSWE was delighted to host special guests Giusto Occhipinti, founding partner of the Sicilian iconic winery COS; renowned Napa Valley winemaker Chris Phelps of Ad Vivum; and Marco Fantinel, proprietor of three Friulian estates: La Roncaia, Sant’Helena and the Fantinel family estate.

Alto Adige Hosts Walkaround Tasting and Seminar

The wineries of the Alto Adige and Sudtriol regions of northeastern Italy hosted a walkaround trade tasting at the Metropolitan Pavilion on April 28th. Guests tasted wines from over 25 producers, made from 20 different grape varieties. Producers included Abbazia di Novacella, Girlan, Tenuta J. Hofstätter, Tiefenbrunner, Tramin and Peter Zemmer, among others. Master Sommelier Tim Gaiser also led a seminar.

UFCW Hosts ‘Tee Up For a Cure’ and Honors Steve Bellini

UFCW Local 1D and UFCW Local 2D hosted the third annual “Tee Up For a Cure” golf outing on April 27th at Richmond Country Club, benefiting Michael’s Cause of Staten Island, a non-profit organization raising awareness of and funding research for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Steve Bellini, Executive Vice President, Sidney Frank Importing Co., was the evening’s honoree. Over $30,000 was raised to support Michael’s Cause.
