Local NJLSA: Spring Into March

March Madness kicks off on March 15th, followed by St. Patrick’s Day on the 17th, and Easter on the 27th. Our industry has a lot to celebrate, including Daylight Savings on Sunday the 13th and the official start of spring on Monday the 21st, the day after Palm Sunday. Let’s hope that Mother Nature will cooperate and that Punxsutawney Phil got it right when we were told that there was no shadow cast—and an early spring is forecast.  I will cross my fingers and plan accordingly!

The Annual NJLSA-PAC Golf Outing will be on Tuesday, June 21st at a new venue.

After five years at Royce Brook we decided to make a move to centrally located Forsgate Country Club, right off Exit 8A of the New Jersey Turnpike in Monroe Township. We will be using both the Banks and the Palmer courses for a total of 36 championship holes in addition to their award winning dining and catering facilities.

This year’s outing will also be dedicated to the memory of Joseph A. DeMarco, who passed away right before the Fourth of July weekend last year at the age of 80. In addition to owning High Grade Beverage, Joe was extremely dedicated to protecting and defending our industry as well as fostering and sustaining longstanding relationships with key members of our State Legislature.

We hope you will be able to come out and support the NJLSA and the industry that supports you while also paying homage to a true industry patriarch, ‘Joe’ DeMarco.

Go to NJLSA.com for registration information on this annual sell-out event!

Our National affiliate the American Beverage Licensees (ABL) will be hosting their annual membership meeting in Denver, Colorado, this June and the NJLSA will be participating. This is always a great opportunity to network and find out what is going on in other states, and we all look forward to seeing first-hand how recreational marijuana is impacting and changing the marketplace in Colorado as well as giving new meaning to the phrase “Rocky Mountain High.”

Several NJLSA Board Members will be joining our counterparts and learning about both federal and state issues that are impacting our industry. There will also be members of the Wine & Spirit Wholesalers of America (WSWA), National Beer Wholesalers of America (NBWA), Distilled Spirit Council of the United States (DISCUS), President’s Forum, Wine Institute, and Marijuana Policy Project (MPP) on hand and participating.

If you are interesting in attending please call our Trenton office at (609) 396-1980 for registration information or go to ABLusa.org for additional information.

As we plot our course between now and the next election of our full legislature in 2017, we are seeking out retailers in key legislative districts to step up and become more active. In the coming months we will be contacting all retailers in these key legislative districts and offering our full support to ensure that YOUR VOICE is being heard by YOUR state legislators.

We know right now that we are going to have to step up our efforts in the June budget cycle, and then really step it up in the December/January Lame Duck Session that will follow the next full election.

There will be a major effort in the next two years to raise our two-license limit and make New Jersey a chain state for big box retailers like Costco, Walmart and Wegmans to name a few.  Something we already know would be very, very bad for our independent retail sector!

Please reach out to me directly at PaulSantelle@NJLSA.com, if you would like to do more and step up to support the industry that has supported you for so many years!
