G’Vine Taps Best ‘Gin-tenders’
Bartender Jamie Jones of Manchester,
England, was crowned the G’Vine Gin
Connoisseur 2013, the world’s best gin
bartender, after a competition in June in
Cognac, France, home of G’Vine Gin.
For the first time since the competition’s
inception four years ago, two other bartend-
ers were awarded for their achievements in
what is often referred to as one of the world’s
most difficult and respected bartending con-
tests. MeaghanDorman (Raines LawRoom,
NYC)won theTechnique award; andKatrin
Reitz (La Dee Da bar, Germany) won the
award for Knowledge.
The G’Vine Gin Connoisseur
Program (GCP) 2013 attracted hundreds
of entries from dozens of countries around
the world. Finalists included Mike
Tomasic (The Wild Rover, Sydney),
Cari Hah (Cole’s, Los Angeles), Mari
Nakano (The Peninsula Hotel, Tokyo),
Mohammed Irwan Majid (CUT by
Wolfgang Puck, Singapore), Kellie Thorn
(Empire State South, Atlanta) and Ivan
Villegas (O’Clock Bar, Madrid).
GCP 2013 created quite a buzz in the
mixology world when it was revealed that
six of the 15 finalists were female, thought
to be the highest percentage of women
ever in any global bartending contest
finals. “The number of female finalists
in the GCP 2013 perfectly reflects the
rising importance of women in the bar
industry,” said Audrey Fort, G’Vine
U.S. Director. G’Vine Gin is imported to

Takes a Village

this year’s Manhattan Cocktail
Classic, Ron Cooper, founder
of Del Maguey Single Village
Mezcal, was on hand, proudly
sharing organic, artisanal ex-
pressions of Del Maguey as
well as his impressions of the
overall mezcal category. Coo-
per started paving the way in
the U.S. for mezcal in 1995. Says Cooper:
“Discovering farmer producers in remote
villages was a eureka moment for me and
the idea of bringing this great elixir out of
those remote villages to friends outside,
with a similar taste sensibility, turns me
on.” Confirmation that Del Maguey re-
mains the young category’s gold standard
came via this year’s Ultimate Spirits Chal-
lenge, where Del Maguey Minero Mezcal
de Oaxaca Mexico (92 proof, SRP $69.99)
was awarded a Chairman’s Trophy.
Wine Soars On-Premise in May
Restaurant Sciences LLC, an independent
firm that tracks food and beverage sales
in North America, reported that May on-
premise wine sales surpassed $4 billion. An-
nually, May is the top month for on-premise
wine sales, with 6% more volume sales
compared to an average month. Even with
the strong sales in May, 2013 has showed
wine case sales ranging from flat to slightly
up compared to 2012. “Once again, May
proved to be a banner month for on-prem-
ise wine sales with Cinco deMayo, Mother’s
Day and graduations contributing to the top
month in wine volume sales,” said Chuck
Ellis, CEO and president of Restaurant Sci-
ences. Top varietals for May were Chardon-
nay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Grigio
with volume market shares of 11.1%, 7%
and 5.8% respectively.
