CHARLES MERINOFF TO BE
HONORED AT AMERICAN
CANCER SOCIETY GALA
Industry members will gather on Oc-
tober 7

for the 36
th
annual Wine &
Spirits Industry Gala at The Pierre,
which raises funds for the American
Cancer Society. This year’s honoree is
Charles Merinoff, Chairman and CEO
of The Charmer Sunbelt Group, who
will be honored with the Dr. Louis
Berger Memorial Award, which his fa-
ther Herman Merinoff received for in
1986. The American Cancer Society is
also celebrating its centennial this year.
John R. Seffrin, chief executive officer
of the American Cancer Society, said,
“In our 100 years of existence, we have
contributed to many groundbreaking
discoveries that have brought us closer
to understanding, preventing and treat-
ing the disease, and this century, we are
looking to put ourselves out of business
by making it cancer’s last century.”
GOV. CUOMO THROWS
STATE’S WEIGHT BEHIND WINE
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo re-
cently announced the launch of
a new television ad campaign to
promote New York State’s award-
winning wines and further grow the
Taste NY experience. The 30-sec-
ond ad was developed in response to
input received at the State’s Wine,
Beer and Spirits Summit where the
Governor pledged to support New
York’s position as a leader in wine
production and boost tourism to
grow the economy Upstate. Gover-
nor Cuomo premiered the television
ad on August 13
th
at the Governor’s
Cup Wine Tour and Competition
awards ceremony.
At the ceremony, the Governor
also announced that Keuka Spring
Vineyards 2012 Riesling of the Finger
Lakes region won this year’s Gover-
nor’s Cup, a large silver chalice, rec-
ognizing the “Best of Show” among
842 entries in the annual New York
Wine & Food Classic wine competi-
tion. In addition, McCall Wines from
Long Island won the “Winery of the
Year” award, presented to the winery
with the best overall showing based
on the level and number of awards in
relation to entries.
“We are honored that Gover-
nor Cuomo presented the Gover-
nor’s Cup and Winery of the Year
awards,” said Jim Trezise, President
of the New York Wine & Grape
Foundation, which sponsors the
Classic. “We applaud the winners in
a very competitive event, as well as
the Governor’s strong support of the
New York wine industry.”
