overwhelmingly positive role America’s

the U.S. economy, providing nearly

million direct jobs and having an
overall economic impact of more
than $184 billion.

The Provence Wine Council’s U.S.
trade office is happy to report that
retail sales of imported dry rosé wines
in America continued their double-digit
climb in the first half of 2012. Nielsen
data holds that sales of imported rosés
priced $12 and above shot up 26.4%
by volume and 22.8% by value in the
first half of 2012, compared to 1.6%
and 4%, respectively, for the total
U.S. table wine market. This increase
comes on the heels of a 26% jump in
value for the year 2011, and extends
imported rosé’s double-digit growth
trend to more than eight straight years.

Within the sparkling wine category,

compared to 2011, sales were up
nearly 57% and volumes are up 58%
in the food and drug channels for the

to SymphonyIRI.

The 2012 California wine grape
harvest—described qualitatively as
“
excellent,” “outstanding” and “ideal”—
was up only modestly quantitatively,
estimated at 3.7 million tons, com-
pared to 3.3 million tons in 2011, ac-
cording to Wine Institute. Meanwhile,
the International Organisation of Vine
and Wine (OIV) reported that global
wine production in 2012 will be at its
lowest level since 1975. Among the
major EU wine-producing countries,
only Portugal and Greece expected
increases over 2011. Especially dry cli-
matic conditions and decreased acre-
age under vine were the main reasons
for the shorter crops in Europe. Coun-
tries where output trended upward are
mainly in the southern hemisphere,
led by Chile and South Africa.
